iOS 6 Update Offers Chance and Challenge for Developers

Bangalore: Like every iOS release in the past, Apple promised some fairly major enhancements and new features with iOS 6. Previously iOS 5 was a major release with novel features like Siri; a voice-controlled assistant – which raised the bar in mobile operating systems. iOS 6 adds more than 200 new features to the mobile operating system.

Apple's iOS 6 software update is going to offer both opportunities and challenges to developers of third party applications reports Shaun Nichols on V3. The update, which will probably arrive in the fall, will bring a couple of enhancements for Apple's mobile platform such as an overhauled Maps platform and the expansion of the Siri tool.

Tom Lounibos, chief executive of mobile application testing firm Soasta, said that the expanded capabilities of iOS 6 could prove more overwhelming for third party developers than prior updates. With the new features, app builders would have to devote more time to coding and testing their software to ensure fault- free operation.

On the other hand, Lounibos noted that the addition of capabilities for the iPad in particular will introduce new chances for developers."All of these iPad developers are getting really excited about what they can do. A lot of them are trying to figure how deep they want to go with voice and Siri integration," Lounibos stated.

The prospect of new form factors is also complicating matters. Apple has previously announced integration with car makers and is rumoured to be developing a branded television set line.

Even the company's current products might be changing form factor, multiple reports have pointed out that Apple is looking to offer a 4-inch screen with the next version of iPhone. This handset is reported to be targeted for an autumn release alongside the iOS 6 update.

With new screen sizes to accommodate, Lounibos thinks iOS developers might be forced to address a problem which Android application developers have to deal with.

"Screen sizes are particularly difficult in terms of optimization," he said.

"Whether it is a new iPhone or a TV, the mobile devices that we know today are going to take on all kinds of new views."
