Bangalore: If we look back a few years ago, mobile phones were only used to either make a call or send an SMS. However, with the various innovations in the mobile space, mobile phones have made every other devises redundant and are now very much a part of our life. One such innovation that had a great impact on the mobile space is the mobile applications. Mobile app development is not all about developing an app. However it also includes the designing part of it. There are many frameworks available in the market to help developers build great apps.

1.    PhoneGap
Produced by Adobe Systems, PhoneGap is an open source application development framework based on the Apache Condova project. It allows developers to deploy their mobile applications to multiple mobile devices with a single codebase. Currently, PhoneGap supports the iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Symbian, BlackBerry, Tizen and the HP webOS operating systems. Some of its features includes, Cordova WebView, Overhauled JavaScript. It was first developed at the iPhoneDevCamp in San Francisco. The “PhoneGap Build” service permits developers to upload their source code to a cloud compiler. Some of its features include the accelerometer, camera, compass, geolocation and barcode scanner.

2.    Rhodes
Developed by Motorola Solutions Inc, Rhodes is an open source Ruby – based mobile app framework for developing native mobile applications. It supports the iPhone, Android, Windows Mobile, Blackberry and the Windows Phone7. Some of its features includes, barcode, signature capture, Bluetooth, support for HTML5, RhoGen Appgenerator and model view controller.

3.    NimbleKit
For developers who are not familiar with the IOS SDK or the Objective – C language then NimbleKit is the best option for them. Developers would only need to be familiar with writing an HTMl page with JavaScript code. Developers have to select the respective templates to develop applications for the iPad, iPod or the iPhone.  

4.    Appcelerator Titanium
Developed by Appcelerator Inc, the Appcelerator Titanium framework was launched in December 2008. At present, the framework supports development of iPhone, Android, iPad, and the BlackBerry apps. The framework allows developers to build, test and launch high quality applications. Some of its features includes: support for cross platform app development, develop applications with a single code, a platform independent API for accessing native UI components and others.

5.    MoSync
Developed by MoSync AB, the MoSync is a free open source SDK for developing mobile applications. It is offered under the GPL v2 license and it is integrated with the Eclipse development environment. The framework currently supports the iOS, Android, Windows Mobile, Symbian as well as the Moblin and Java ME Platform. Using this framework, developers can write the applications in C and C++ languages or a combination of HTML 5 and JavaScript.

6.    Sencha Touch
Developed by Sencha, the Sencha Touch framework is widely used by developers to create UI for HTML 5 mobile apps. The framework supports the iOS, Blackberry and Android operating systems. With its flexible layout system, developers using this framework can easily lay out applications for various devices with different shapes and sizes. It automatically detects certain features like geolocation, canvas and others. The framework is available in two versions: a free commercial version and a GPL version.

7.    jQuery Mobile
Developed by the jQuery project team, the jQuery Mobile framework is a touch – optimized web framework. It focuses on the development of applications which are compatible with different smartphones and tablets. It is also compatible with other application frameworks like the PhoneGap and others.
