Bangalore: Microsoft on Monday announced the launch of its “Next App Star” competition for windows phone app developers. “To help your apps get more visibility with more customers, today we are launching a new contest with a very special top prize,” states Microsoft’s Todd Brix in a blog post on windows.com.
The competition is open to the worldwide windows phone developers. Developers who wish to take part in the completion can visit the Dev Center site to register. To qualify for the competition, the app should be live in the Windows Phone Store by March 5, 2013. “It’s easy to participate; registered developers can just visit Dev Center to opt-in by March 5th, and we’ll enter your catalog of published apps in the competition.”
According to the blog post by Brix, the submitted apps will be judged based on the ratings provided by the users and the quality of the app. With regards to the quality, the apps should include the new features of Windows Phone 8 such as Live Tiles.
Based on the judgement, the number of apps for the completion will be narrowed down to 64 “to participate in a head-to-head, bracket-style competition with public voting.”
“Over the next several weeks of voting the field of 64 will be narrowed to 32, 16, 8, 4, 2, and finally the grand prize winner.” To encourage developers, various prizes will be offered throughout the competition. Developers of the 64 apps will receive cash prizes including a free one – year subscription to the Dev Center as well as a Nokia Lumia 920 Windows Phone.
The app that remains till the end of the competition will be declared the champion of the “Next App Star” competition and will be featured in one of Windows Phone U.S. TV advertisements. According to Brix, this will bring “national exposure and a lot of buzz to one developer’s creation.”
