The Journey : Early Days to How I Got Here
It was a sweet accident that I landed into the designing field. From my early age I was good at drawings and sketches. So from school days to college days I was part of the Arts club and had won many awards. But designing never struck me as a career. When I was in the college final year, for a project I visited a company whose director saw my paintings and introduced me to the wonderful software called Photoshop. Interestingly, I had never heard of it before. I was mesmerized and started to spend days and nights learning it myself. I was addicted to it and it was like playing a game I was trying to reach from one level to the other. That gave me confidence and after college I joined as a graphic designer at Nainar infotainment in Coimbatore. There, I did a lot of print related designs and websites. Then I joined as a visualizer at Brandkraaft advertising.
Decisions That Mattered
My interest was in design so the only important career decision I took was to work in what I was interested and not what others wanted me to do. Generally art and design is always seen as a hobby and not as a main career option at least in India. For us getting into a job is the foremost thing. That’s the reason why there are lakhs of engineers. There can be thousands of those engineers whose passion lies in design or other art form. Now slowly the awareness and opportunities in design field are in demand, thanks to the growing mobile apps. So follow your heart and be honest with your efforts. Your career will automatically be taken care of.
The Turning Points
  1. Working as an art director on the startup Zoomin from inception to execution. It won the PC-World - 2008- Best Photo sharing platform in India. Design was one of the deciding factors to win.
  2. Grabbler - Facebook Game. It emerged as #1 in Facebook Developer contest India.
  3. SAS Survival Guide iPhone app- First to win a Webby Award 2011- Official honoree from India
Work and Role: Then and now
Basic design principles are always the same for any medium. The opportunity to work on Mobile apps which is the new and emerging medium is very exciting. It throws up enough challenges when designing the whole experience for the users who themselves are evolving and getting used to this new medium. So as compared to my previous jobs where it was more of Web and print, the current job is latest in technology and gives me a great amount of satisfaction where thousands of people use your app and give instant feedback on it. When I see good reviews in the app-store I know my job is done.
Two Years Down the Line
We see there are so many small ideas (apps) that have become a huge success in the mobile medium. So I would like to continue designing products that will enhance people lives. I would like to spread the awareness of using design as an important aspect when developing any apps for smart devices and to put India as one of the favorite destinations for design as well.
What I Learnt Along the Way
Important lesson I have learnt is to learn from your previous mistakes and use it as an opportunity and improvise on your next projects. To be able to enjoy and to be original, honest and confident in your efforts will take anyone a long way ahead.
Must Focus Areas For the Future
With all the latest mobile devices the technology is already there in-built. Steve Jobs said "The best thing you can do with technology is to make it disappear". I believe its upto the Design and UX community to think of ways to give these high technologies as simple as possible to the users. That is the future.
